A Dog Friendly Staycation: London

My little Rupert comes everywhere with me; I’ve made it almost a hobby to find new dog friendly places whether that be a cafe, somewhere for afternoon tea or a place to stay overnight. I’m thinking of putting together a huge guide of dog friendly places in London quite soon – I think it would be really helpful to have somewhere to refer back to (me included!) if you’re not sure where to go with your pooch!

This post however is a little diary style number on a recent London staycation with Rupert, one of my best pals Laura and one of her (three!) pugs Tilly. Tilly and Rupert are so bloomin’ in love and they keep each other occupied! Plus, they both love the fuss they receive and are so well behaved wherever we go! Her other two are of course; but they’re a little older and probably prefer snoozing at home; and have no time for playing with these young’uns.

We checked in to one of my absolute favourite dog friendly hotels; The Ampersand. Located in South Kensington, you’re in one of the most beautiful areas in London, as well as it being surrounded by plenty of places to go with your fur baby. Upon our arrival, the staff were delighted to see two little pugs ready for their stay – bringing them beds and bowls straight to our room – as well as giving them lots of love and attention which made us immediately relax. We stayed in a Deluxe Studio room as advised for more space for the dogs – but I’ve stayed in a smaller room before and it was more than fine. It was absolutely beautiful as always and we were obsessed with the comfy AF bed! The pugs settled so nicely and a little later on we got them ready for a little visit to Liberty for afternoon tea.

When in London with Rupert, I always opt for the bus instead of the tube. When you have a small dog, it can be a bit risky to let them walk on the floor especially at rush hour – we don’t want them getting trodden on! So of course I carry him in the underground if needed, but the bus will always win! Or, Hailo! I use Hailo quite often and I’ve never had any problems RE having a dog with me!  We headed down to Oxford Street and spent a while looking round Liberty – the most dog friendly department store ever; they don’t even need to be carried, they can walk! The staff there absolutely adore dogs, and we got stopped a lot – something the pugs bloomin’ love! After a little browse, we headed to the second floor to Cafe Liberty – a beautiful eatery where you (and your dog) can enjoy breakfast, brunch, lunch and afternoon tea. It was just the right time for afternoon tea and so the pugs were given water and treats, and we were given ours, lols. The staff here are always super accommodating and go above and beyond to meet any needs you may have – plus it’s SO GOOD. If I need to schedule in a meeting and I know I’ll have Rupert with me; this is a great central place I always suggest!

Laura and I decided we wanted to pop in to Topshop, being in Oxford Circus and all – and again; Topshop is somewhere I’ve never had a problem taking Rupert in before. We just scooped up Tilly and Rupert and went about our shop! I remember the first time I went in with Rupert I was nervous; but the security guy at the door just said to keep him held – followed by fuss as always! I’ve never had a problem in any clothing shops when carrying Rupert actually – except in Anthropologie – they said he could walk around and didn’t need to be carried! Woo!

Once back at the hotel and after some chill time (and two very asleep pugs), we needed some dinner. The Ampersand has two restaurants, one of which allows dogs – The Drawing Room. I often pop in here with Rupert for a hot chocolate or something light; its such a lovely calm atmosphere PLUS they do the best afternoon tea! Seeing as Laura and I were in full on relax mode – in bed, robes on, bath had etc etc – we opted for the best of both; room service! Special mention to the skinny fries. Oh. My. So good. Also don’t you just love a hotel that supplies a robe?

The following morning – after the comfiest nights sleep ever in the biggest most marshmallowy bed – we once again decided on room service for some breakfast! Pals, this breakfast was perfection. We had all the usual continental stuff, as well as pastries and omelettes and fruit and cheeses and just all the breakfast food of dreams! I just love the food here. YES. Can you spot Rupert’s paws on the hunt for toast?!

Something else I love about The Ampersand is that you can arrange a late checkout at no extra charge – so if, like us, you want a slow start to the day you can totally do that here. With a bed like theirs, who could resist?!

We had a hot chocolate in the Drawing Room after we checked out (PS, the hot chocolates here are divine, you must try) before having a beautiful stroll around South Kensington. The pugs had the best time at the hotel; they were so excited for the day ahead! If you have a dog or not, The Ampersand is such a lovely place to stay. I always recommend it – it’s such a beautiful boutique hotel in a gorgeous location, luxurious yet affordable with amazing staff and the best food – I can’t wait for our next stay!

For lunch, I wanted to try a new dog friendly venue Laura had recommended to me – Hally’s in Fulham. It’s a sweet little cafe with white brick walls and wooden floors, cool decor and hella amazing food! It has such a chill vibe; the kinda place you can take your laptop in to and just drink coffee whilst you work – such a super cool place to hang out! We decided to just order a few sides to share – skinny fries, mac & cheese, sweet potato wedges… you get the gist! May I point out, by this point the pugs were in full on asleep mode – they’d had it. Not even the smell of mac & cheese could wake them! I’ll definitely be going again; I always love finding new places to add to my list of dog friendly London! Post coming soon, I promise! Then, for desert, we headed to Covent Garden to one of my fave dog friendly hang outs; Primrose Bakery! I’ve done a full post on the bakery here. Cupcakes, milkshakes and dogs – perf! Plus, how cute is it?!

Basically, it was such a lovely staycation and we had the best time – the pugs did too! On our trains home both pooches were fast asleep, probs dreaming of their next adventure together!

I hope you enjoyed a little insight into our dog friendly London stay! I often receive a lot of questions about where Rupert and I go, so I thought I’d start sharing some snippets with you!

Where are your fave places to visit with your pooch?

Thank you so much to The Ampersand and Small Luxury Hotels for hosting us!

  • What a gorgeous post. London looks like an incredible place to visit with pups. I wish Australia was this dog friendly. Unfortunately, dogs are not allowed on public transport or in most cafes, stores etc (with the exception of service animals). Thanks for sharing these beautiful photos and the story of your London staycation. Loved it!
